Contractors handling roads and other projects in Anambra state have been warned against cutting corners and working below specifications.

The Chairman Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works, Mr Emmanuel Nwafor gave the warning in Awka during an interface between the Committee and government contractors across the state.

According to him, there have been several complaints and evidences from members of the public over some shoddy and substandard jobs done by few of the contractors handling projects.

Mr Nwafor said the lawmakers who represent the 30 constituencies in Anambra state would not fold its arms and allow some firms handling government projects to cut corners.

The Works Committee Chairman noted that during last 2024 oversight, several errors were discovered in project execution including improper channeling of drainage channels, use of substandard rod measurements, laying of ashphalts without proper soap cuttings, among other several shortcomings.

He therefore warned that henceforth if similar lapses were detected again, the Committee will recommend to the executive outright termination of such contract without delay.

Mr Nwafor who represents Orumba South Constituency, noted that the executive under the leadership of governor Chukwuma Soludo was doing its best to attend to the pressing needs of the people and so the legislative arm will not sit and watch contractors thwart such efforts which involve tax payers money.

Other members of the Committee including Doctor Jude Akpua representing Njikoka Constituency 2, Chief Paul Obu representing Orumba North Constituency, and Mr Anayo Okpalaeke of Aguata Constituency 1 took their turns to enquire about the delays in completion of some road projects in their various constituencies while harping on the need for proactive measures to ensure timely delivery and proper execution of such projects.

Some of the representatives of the firms handling government projects made some clarifications on their project status even as they promised to abide and work according to stipulated Bill of Qauntity and specifications.

The Commissioner for Works, Mr Ifeanyi Okoma , the Permenent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Stephanie Kerly- Uzor , some works directors and consultants were present during the meeting.
