Anambra Govt Wades into Killing of Female Tailor by Suspected Agunechemba Operatives at Mgbakwu

Anambra State government says it has commenced investigation into the gruesome murder of a middle aged woman at Amaeze village, Mgbakwu in Awka North Council Area of Anambra State.

The victim was reportedly at her tailoring shop when a stray bullet, allegedly fired by operatives of Anambra State government security operatives known as Agunechemba hit and killed her.

According to some eye witnesses several gunshots were heard before the security operatives drove off from the area, leaving the victim in the pool of her blood.

An eye witness, Mr Ugwu Emmanuel, disclosed that the victim was hit on the neck by bullets from gunshots fired by the security operatives, expressing concerns over the practice of shooting indiscriminately during operations.

Another resident, expressed worry that security operatives who ought to be protecting innocent citizens are the one killing them, calling for justice for the deceased.

However, an indigene who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the security operatives were about leaving after their operation, when some youths blocked the roads leading to the shooting.

The incident which sparked protest, AnambraDaily gathered led to desertion of the Nkwo Mgbakwu market as angry natives took the woman’s corpse to Mgbakwu police Station to register their grievances over rampant sporadic shootings by the Agunechemba security operatives.

Anambra Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, who reacted to the development, said the government had already commenced investigation into the matter.

While condemning the unlawful killing, the Commissioner emphasized that the primary objective of Agụnechemba outfit was to restore security and not to instill fear or engage in reckless shootings.

He further assured that the government would not tolerate any abuse of power or extrajudicial actions from any security operative in the state.

Mefor further assured that the government would reach out to the commander of Agụnechemba, Ken Emeakayi, to ascertain what really happened even as he noted that an armed security operative is only justified in using force when confronted with a serious threat.
