Glaucoma: Experts Advice Citizens Above 40Yrs to Perform Regular Eye Check to Avert Blindness

Health experts have advised citizens to undergo early eye check-ups and seek prompt treatment to prevent irreversible blindness.

The Chairman, Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), Anambra State Chapter, Dr Chidiebere Ezeanowai, disclosed in Onitsha as part of the commemoration of this year’s World Glaucoma Week.

Dr. Ezeanowai who disclosed that glaucoma cases are on the rise across the country called for more collaboration between the governments and non governmental organizations, in promoting eye health.

He urged Nigerians, particularly those over 40 and those with a family history of glaucoma, to prioritise regular eye tests and commence early treatment if detected.

Concerning self medication, Dr Ezeanowai further warned eye patients against indiscriminate use of eye drops, asking them to seek professional advice before using any medication.

Contributing, Dr Chizobam Azubuike, member NOA Anambra State Chapter, said that children also have common eye infection and should be taken to Optometrists or an Eye Doctor for proper treatment.

Dr Azubuike highlighted the different stages of Glaucoma saying that it progresses through initial eye pressure issues, to optic nerve damage and, if untreated, it could lead to vision loss.
