Senator (Dr.) Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial District and Hon. Peter Aniekwe, also representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, have appealed to youths behind the violent conflict between Egbeagu Eziagulu-Otu Aguleri and Umuoji, Umuoba Anam to desist from further aggressions and tow the path of peace.
The national lawmakers made the call on Sunday after a closed door meeting with the President-Generals, political leaders, and prominent sons from Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities at Nsugbe, Anambra East LGA of Anambra State.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Senator Nwoye stressed that peaceful coexistence of both communities over centuries was a divine arrangement which must not be altered because of greed and personal aggrandizements.
He urged the elements behind the violent confrontations to cease fire and allow community leaders and mediators appointed to resolve the conflict do their work.
“There have been sustained efforts on our part to finally settle this dispute and restore lasting peace between our Omanbala brothers which have lingered for some days now.
“We urge security operatives to move into the affected communities and secure lives and property of the people”, Nwoye said.
The Senator and his House of Reps counterpart, Anekwe thanked the traditional rulers in Anambra East and West for their interventions which has prevented any form of retaliation or reprisal attacks.
“There have been sustained efforts on our part to finally settle this dispute and restore lasting peace between our Omanbala brothers which have lingered for some days now.
The lawmakers also urged Anambra State government to take proactive measures to ensure swift and amicable resolution of the crisis.
“We therefore call on the Chairman of Anambra East Local Government and Government of Anambra State to put in greater efforts and in collaboration with relevant Federal Government Agencies to take immediate practical steps to ensure immediate restoration of lasting peace between the affected communities.
“We urge our people in the affected communities to please apply restraint, avoid all forms of violence, maintain peaceful coexistence and rest assured that we will do everything within our power and influence to ensure the restoration of lasting peace in the affected communities”.
The lawmakers also begged traditional and community leaders to collaborate and contribute their quotas towards restoring peace and harmony in the area.
They equally condoled with the traditional rulers, political leaders and the family members of the victims of the clash, especially those who lost their lives in the crisis.
