Late NEC Chairman, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu

Former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu has died at the age of 83.

Prof. Nwosu, who was Chairman of NEC, now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from 1989 to 1993, reportedly died in United States.

He is fondly remembered for conducting the landmark June 12, 1993 presidential poll, widely adjudged as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll till date.

The election which produced late Chief Moshood Abiola, the candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the president was later annulled under a controversial circumstances.

Appointed by then military head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, Nwosu introduced key electoral reforms, including the Option A4 and Open Ballot voting methods into the Nigerian electoral system.
