Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has appointed Barr (Mrs) Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike as the new substantive Registrar.
Nwokike, an Awka indigene, prior to her appointment was of the Registry Department, University of Nigeria, Nsukka .
A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Information and Public Relations, Dr Emmanuel Ojukwu on Wednesday stated that Nwokike emerged tops after an elaborate interview headed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Amb. Greg .O Mbadiwe .
“She scored 764 while the second and third scored 500 and 480 respectively. A total of 13 persons applied but only 10 turned out for the interview” the statement disclosed.
Announcing the result of the interview, the Pro Chancellor emphasized that the interview was based purely on merit . He therefore went ahead to announce Barr Mrs Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike as the new Registrar.
The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi who was one of the panelists, on behalf of the Chairman, commended the other participating panelists which include Gen Funsho Oyeneyin (Rtd), Hon. Hafiz Oladepo, Hon. Chief Augustine Onyedebelu , Professor Kenneth Ngwoke, Prof. Anthony Okoye and Engr Dr Paul Okolie. She also thanked the University Registry Staff for their dedication to duty.
Representatives of the Federal Character Commission, Mr Chinwuba Emmanuel Emeke and Mrs Nwankwo Patricia commended the interview process as transparent and worthy of emulation as the result of the interview was released immediately.
In a short ceremony, the Pro-Chancellor presented a formal letter of appointment to Mrs Nwokike as the Substantive Registrar of the university. According to the letter, the tenure is for a non –renewable 5 – year term effective 23rd October 2024. The letter further stipulates that the new Registrar shall be responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the day to day running of the University.
Mrs Nwokike becomes the first Awka indigene to hold such position since the inception of the institution reflecting the university’s commitment to merit and experience in academic leadership.
Her educational background, included a PhD in view, an LLM in Maritime Law and Policy, complemented by a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), as well as a second degree, from the Faculty of Law, UNN.
Her professional career in university administration spans numerous key roles, beginning as an Assistant Faculty Officer in the Faculty of Law at UNN, and later advancing to critical positions in the Records and Statistics Unit and the Faculty of Business Administration. Notably, she served as Coordinator of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research at UNEC, where she fostered innovative academic-industry partnerships and promoted entrepreneurship education.
In 2022, she took on the role of Unit Head in the Personnel Services Unit at UNEC, further showcasing her administrative leadership by managing human resources and implementing policies that enhanced institutional efficiency. Her leadership has been widely recognized, further bolstered by her involvement in professional organizations such as the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA).
