NUJ Condemns Heavy Tax Burden on SMEs by Soludo Administration in Anambra

NIGERIA Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Council has condemned heavy taxation on businesses in Anambra state by the agents of internal generated revenue, IGR, saying it was negatively affecting business owners.

The union also urged the government to redouble its efforts towards curbing insecurity that has reached disturbing and scary dimensions in the State.

In a communique Issued at the end of its September Congress and signed by Comrade Odogwu Emeka and Comrade Aloysius Ofodile, Chairman and Secretary of the Council, respectively, NUJ urged the government to reconsider and restore the state owned newspaper to be digitally driven and improved version either with or without attaching the previous name ‘National Light’.

It also urged the governmrnt to give about 50 slots of employment to that sector.

The communique further read, “The Congress condemned the heavy taxation on businesses in the state by the agents of internal generated revenue which is negatively affecting business owners.

“The Congress called on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, to ensure that electricity consumers are provided with prepaid meters so they can manage their electricity consumption. This will also stop the arbitrary and outrageous monthly estimated billing system currently adopted by EEDC.

“The Congress offered confidence vote on Comrade Obiorah Edogor, PhD, for his tenacity and doggedness as the Editor-in-Chief of the NUJ Anambra State Council’s owned The-WatchDog Magazine, which has been consistently published regardless of paucity of funds and other constraints.

“The Congress commended Hon. Prof. Oby Orogbu for her donation of 15 bags of fertilizer to the Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists for the 2024 planting season.

“The Congress endorsed the nominations for the following Awards: 2024 NUJ Anambra Man of The Year won by Dr Chinedu Anthony Umeadi, Agunaechemba Abagana; 2024 NUJ Anambra Philanthropist Of The Decade won by HRM IGWE MACANTHONY CHINEDU ELIBE OKONKWO, EZEDIORAMMA III OF ALOR and 2024 NUJ Anambra Most Innovative Entrepreneur Of The Year won by Hon. Oliver N. Okennah, Dikemba Ebenebe.

“Congress welcomes the Dr Law Mefor, the new Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment, Anambra State and urged him to partner the NUJ in Anambra as a Union and journalists in the state to have a smooth ride.

“Congress described as apt the topic of the 2024 Press Week/ Man Of The Year ceremony November 7th Congress: ” The Media And Trajectories For Anambra State’s Future In A Dwindling Economy”.
