NLC organises sporting events, gala/suya nights, others ahead May Day

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Anambra State has announced line-up week long activities to herald the 2024 May 1 Workers Day.

Chairman, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, in a press briefing said the activities would project the image of the Congress as well as unite the over 35 affiliate bodies.

He listed some of the activities to include novelty matches among the affiliate bodies, medical outreaches, gala and suya nights, among others.

He said, “On April 25 & 26 will be visit to Prison , ASHIA medical outreach/Lecture with Dr Simeon Onyemachi, CEO ASHIA / Medical outreach/ security talks by Commissioner for Police and Wife of Anambra Governor on Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo at Teachers House, NUT State Secretariat

“Unions are to mobilize their members particularly those registered with ASHIA for Eye glasses, Medical check up, etc.

“April 27 is Grandfinal of sports Competition and Award Ceremony at Awka City stadium by 7am. Members around Awka and environs to come and cheer athletes.

“April 30 Visit to SabMiller by 10am and
Suya Night by 6 pm at Aroma ( venue to be decided soon)

“May 1 is D day for Match Past at Alex Ekwueme Square, giving of medals and cups to winners, fun and enjoyment galore.

Describing the state workforce as engine house that facilitates government activities, Nwafor restated NLC’s readiness to partner and corporate with government to move the state forward.

The NLC boss who is less than two years in office, said the week-long activities were part of his campaign promises.

“During my campaigns, I promised to come up with programmes that will unite the workers and give them sense of belonging, at the same time make them see themselves as contributors to the development of the state.

“If we’re having interface with government, we’ll see ourselves as one, as there’s strength in unity. We expect over 70,000 workers in the state to troop out en masse as I believe we have what it takes to place our demands on the table and will be listened to,” he added.
