A Non Governmental Organisation, United Business Women Association of Nigeria and Diaspora (UBWA) has described effective representation by politicians as one of the cardinal means of empowering the masses especially the women folk.
The group challenged political office holders to justify the mandate given to them by providing democratic dividends to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.
Rising from its End of Year Get Together and Palliatives Distribution in Onisha, Anambra State, President of the Association, Dr Nkiruka Duru advised politicians to shun selfish interests and concentrate on how to fulfill their campaign promises to effect positive socio economic changes in the society.
“I am calling on our Senators and Houses of Representatives Members to be alive to their social contract with the people who elected them, because I have observed that most of them don’t know why they are there,” she decried.
Recalling the goal of the body established in 2020 which included being in the vanguard of assisting the less privileged, Duru said the body had impacted on the lives of people through mobilization of women and other stakeholders to hold serving political class accountable.
“As part of our responsibilities which is caring for the needy and the helpless, we are distributing bags of rice worth millions of naira,” she added.
One of the Beneficiaries, Ambassador Ngozi Obiako, the Anambra State Coordinator of the association, testified that the association had touched lives.
“Today, we are unveiling our new office and just like in the era of COVID-19, we are feeding both members and non-members from the 36 states and beyond”
Other beneficiaries, including Sisters Ogochukwu Okoye, Nkechi Okorie and Ijeoma Chukwudi appreciated the association for extending helping hand to them.
They revealed that widows, orphanages and the sick had benefited a lot from the association in just three years of existence.
