A group of women in Anambra State have condemned last week protest involving certain women who marched naked along the streets of Awka, the state capital.
The women, under the umbrella of Ultimate Business Women And Farmers Association of Nigeria (UBWFAN) regretted that the action was inimical to the nature and character of Anambra women.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Police Commissioner, Mr Aderemi Adeoye, National President, Nkiru Nwagbo said the group’s investigation revealed that the nude women were prostitutes recruited and paid from outside the state to carry out such act.
She said, “Going by our painstaking investigation it has been discovered that those women are not from Anambra state but some prostitutes recruited from outside the state and paid to go on a protest.
“We want to use this opportunity to state that Anambra women are well trained, a highly cultured and well mannered to reduce themselves to this act of lunacy.”
While advising women of the state not to allow themselves to be used by desperate elements for their selfish gains, Nwagbo regretted that women were on the receiving end of the show of shame creating a wrong impression about women in the state.
“Crime fighting has received great attention in the state to the extent that the activities of the unknown gunmen and miscreants have been tackled with superlative results in the affected eight local government areas of Anambra state.
“Also the confidence of the general public on the Police Command has been restored as people now go about their lawful duties without fear or apprehension to the glory of God,” she added.
Speaking on the association’s program of events next two months, Nwagbo noted that the function would attract women from the 21 local government areas of the state.
She said the body had, since inception been supportive to women and children through charity activities and skill acquisition which had been far reaching.
Responding, Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye commended the Association for creating homogeneous relationship among Anambra women, stressing that such bodies were needed as weapon to fight crime in the state.
He noted that the nude protest was not a true reflection of Anambra women, saying it was stage managed by those who had been using the cover of fighting insecurity to execute cult killings in Awka town.
He revealed that the perpetrators have been arrested and were facing charges before court of law.
“Some people went to town using some people to drive home their inordinate demands and such actions are not welcomed in Anambra state,” he stressed.
