Surety arraigned over failure to produce fleeing defendant

A 62-year-old man, Raimi Adebayo, who stood surety for a run-away defendant, on Thursday appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on a count charge of conspiracy and obstruction and perversion of the course of justice.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant stood surety for one Ganiyu Samod in suit number Oj/1/8/2022.

Uche said that the surety undertook to produce the defendant in court for trial.

He, however, said that the surety failed to produce the defendant for trial on Sept. 16, 2022, Feb. 17, June 23, Sept. 15 and other dates.

According to the prosecutor, the surety never produced the defendant for trial.

He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Section 97 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate L. K. J. Layeni granted the surety bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Oct. 13 for trial. (NAN)(
