The Anambra Government says it plans to commence remedial work at the gully erosion sites on Nnobi-Ojoto Road, which has cut off eight communities from the rest of the state.
Mr Ifeanyi Okeoma, the state’s Commissioner for Works said this when he spoke with journalists on Wednesday in Awka.
Okeoma said that Gov. Chukwuma Soludo had directed the ministry to carry out remedial work on the sites to ensure that the impact of the environmental disaster was reduced on the people by reconnecting them with the rest of the state.
“We are going to start remedial intervention work on the gully erosion to save those communities from further destruction and also protect the road.
“That road is very strategic in the state within days because it connects communities in Idemili North and South Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
“Soludo has directed that the ministry to engage a contractor for the job and I wish to inform you that something would be done soonest,” he said.
Okeoma said that the government would embark on more roads construction once the rains were over.
“We are doing quite a number of internal roads in Awka, the state capital to reduce the pressure on the major roads.
”I must add that more roads will be constructed in the hinterlands once we enter the dry season,” he said.
The Commissioner said that the initiative was to reduce pressure on the existing roads and guarantee the confidence of investors.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports many communities in Aguata, Idemili North and Idemili South, Ekwusigo, Anaocha LGAs of the state had been battling with the menace of gully erosion.
Works minister, David Umahi had on Sunday visited one of the erosion sites in Oba in Idemili South LGA, where a portion of the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway had been cut off by erosion.(NAN)
