Mixed reactions have continued to trail plans by authorities of Nnamdi Azikiwe University(UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State to install Closed-Circuit Television(CCTV) cameras in the various offices of lecturers on campus.

The decision to install the cameras, Daily Vendor gathered was aimed at curbing the rising cases of sexual harassment against female students by lecturers of the university.

Recall that in August the management of the university announced the suspension of some lecturers accused of sexual harassment.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Esimone, removed a lecturer (name withheld) in the Faculty of Law, and others accused of sexual harassment by students of the University.

But some lecturers were said to be incomplete with the idea of mounting CCTV cameras in their offices.

“The decision is an infringement on our privacy and a gross violation of our fundamental human rights to hold unhindered and uncensored discussions with our students,” a lecturer who prefered anonymity said.

But Vice Chancellor had insisted that there was no going back on the plan, insisting that discussions that should take place with students must not be in secret.

“Lecturers are paid with tax payers money and therefore should know or be privy to how lecturers discharge their formal duties,” he said.

A source who supported the CCTV project said, “This will boost the confidence of the students as communications would no longer be shrouded in secrecy.”
