Police in Anambra State said they were on the trail of killer of a shop owner in Onitsha main market Tuesday evening.

The suspect, presently at large, reportedly stabbed the deceased to death after being contracted to assist him (deceased) offload goods in his warehouse located at the section where baking materials are sold.

Pandemonium reportedly erupted when the deceased body was suddenly found in the pool of his own blood by traders in the market while the suspect was nowhere to be found.

Anambra Daily gathered that the suspect had stabbed the deceased following a brawl that ensued over payment negotiations.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed the incident to be a murder case, said some persons have been fingered, while efforts were on to track and unmask them.

He said, “It’s a case of murder which happened at Bright Street, inside main market around 4pm. But I can’t confirm the identity of the culprit, which is immaterial.

“Murder is murder, whoever that commits it will answer for it. I don’t have any information about the identity of the suspect but we will ensure that whoever that’s responsible is arrested and made to face the full wrath of law.

“When our men got the report, they quickly mobilised to the scene and discovered the man in the pool of his own blood. He was rushed to the hospital where the doctors on duty confirmed him dead.

“Preliminary investigation shows that its a murder case and some persons have been fingered and we’re currently on their track to unmask and arrest them.

“Information available to us suggests that it wasn’t a robbery incident because all the goods in warehouse were still intact. It’s a pure murder case and the circumstances surrounding the act must be unraveled.”
