The Anambra State government has debunked claims by the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) that 63 per cent of teachers in the state are corps members.

Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh described the statement as false, challenging the NYSC to provide data to prove the claim.

The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Blessing Iruma, had at the 2022 Corps Employers Workshop in Awka, revealed that 63 per cent of teachers in the State were corps members.

But speaking to reporters on Sunday, Chuma-Udeh said, “The claim that 63 per cent of teachers in Anambra are corps members is false.

“Inasmuch as corps members are posted to schools because of the dearth of industries where they will work, I don’t think that 63 per cent of teachers in Anambra are corps members.

“That is an erroneous assertion and I challenge her to provide data for that.

“The state Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, in his passion for education, ordered the employment of 5,000 teachers, who have been posted to their respective places of work. They will actually be oriented by Tuesday.”
