A former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, has said Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, is gaining prominence nationwide due to the frustration of the youths.
Obi who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in May and emerged as the LP presidential candidate during its Special National Convention in Asaba, the Delta State capital has emerged as the major contender in the 2023 presidential race due to his increasing popularity amongst Nigerians at home and in Diaspora.
Reacting to the development in an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, Makarfi said the youths have turned to Obi as a salvation symbol due to the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government. “What is happening now in my opinion is not so much about Peter Obi but the frustration of the youths and they are using him as a symbol.
Makarfi also claimed that the former Governor of Anambra State was not allowed to achieve his presidential ambition in the PDP due to the region he came from. He said: “Peter Obi, it is my personal opinion that even if he was frustrated out of PDP, that one must have come from where come from not from any other parts of this country, and it is this politics of edging this person out, edging that person out, and politics is like that.”
The former PDP National Chairman, however, argued that youths should not make decisions on the choice of presidential candidate to vote for in 2023 in anger.
“Let’s agree that was the case, any decision based on anger will not produce anything positive. We accept the frustration but the only rational way forward is to go the way of PDP.”
