The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) suspended its nationwide strike action in the early hours of Thursday, hours after it downed tools.
Five states across the south east and other parts of Nigeria experienced power outages on Wednesday as electricity workers commenced an indefinite industrial strike action.
AnambraDaily learnt that members of the electricity union were protesting the nonpayment of outstanding arrears owed to former workers of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), suspension of conditions of service and career path for workers and the directive by the TCN board to conduct promotion interviews for acting principal managers who are moving to Assistant General Managers.
This paper learnt that the strike was suspended Wednesday night after an emergency meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.
The minister’s spokesman Olajide Oshundun, announced that Ngige intervened in the industrial action.
Following the breakthrough, the NUEE Secretary General, Joe Ajaero, assured that electricity would be restored across the country.
Reacting, the EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, announced resumption of power supply on its network.
He said: “In view of the decision reached yesterday evening at a meeting between the Union/striking electricity employees and the Ministers of Labour and Power, the industrial action has been suspended and restoration of supply commenced since 00.34hrs. Though this has been gradual, it is hoped that before noon today all EEDC outgoing feeders would have fully been restored.
“We sincerely apologise to our esteemed customers for the inconveniences this situation must have caused them, and also appreciate them for their patience and understanding.
“We, at EEDC, assure our customers of our continued committment to providing improved services.
