Anambra Government Assures Swift Restoration of Collapsed Ulasi Bridge

Anambra State government has assured residents of Nnewi South and other road users that it will mobilize resources and manpower for restoration of Collapsed bridge at Ulasi River.

The Commissioner for Works, Anambra State, Engr. Ifeanyi Okonma, gave the assurance when he visited the site of the collapsed Ulasi Bridge on March 7, 2025.

The bridge, which connects Ukpor Nnewi South to the neighboring town of Okija in Ihiala LGA, collapsed last week, raising concern amongst residents and road users.

During the visit, the Mayor of Nnewi South, Hon. Van George Ezeogodi and the member representing Nnewi South 11 Hon Johnbosco Akaegbobi briefed the Commissioner on the situation, explaining that the original contractor in charge of the project during the last regime was kidnapped during a period of insecurity in the state.

They further disclosed that the contractor passed away few days after being released, which led to the project’s abandonment.

Ezeogodi, assured the Commissioner that security in the area has significantly improved under the leadership of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

He emphasized that security has improved in the area and that work on the bridge would not be threatened by security incident.

In response, the Commissioner for Works gave an assurance of prompt government intervention to address the poor state of the bridge.

Other notable people present during the visit included Hon. George Okekwe (Councillor, Ukpor Ward 1), Hon. Nwawulu Ezeana former PG Ukpor and current Special Adviser(SPAD) to the Executive Chairman on Homeland and Community Affairs, Hon Barr. Ikenna Mbazulike PG of Ukpor, represented by his executive members), and Mr Ugochukwu, the Local Government Supervisor for Works, among others.
