Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has joined the global community in celebrating the 2025 International Civil Defence Day, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives, securing critical national assets and maintaining public safety.
Speaking at the event held at the State Command Headquarters in Awka, the State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, emphasized the Corps distinctive role in safeguarding federal, state and local government infrastructure, a responsibility that sets it apart from other security agencies.

“The NSCDC, like the rest of the world, celebrates International Civil Defence Day every year on March 1 to recognize the vital role civil defence plays in protecting lives and critical national assets,” Commandant Maku stated.
He highlighted the Corps’ effectiveness in handling civil unrest, monitoring government facilities, safeguarding oil pipelines, regulating private security companies and ensuring the security of schools under the Safe School Initiative. Additionally, he pointed to the NSCDC’s efforts in curbing illegal mining activities and securing the agro-allied sector.
Enumerating some of Commandant Maku’s achievements as the 17th substantive State Commandant of the NSCDC in Anambra State Command at the event, Deputy Commandant Prominence Ukaobi said he made significant strides in transforming the security landscape of the state since assuming office.
According to her, Maku’s leadership has been marked by a series of innovative initiatives, strategic partnerships and operational successes that have repositioned the NSCDC as a formidable force in maintaining law and order. With this year’s theme : “Civil Defense Guarantee of Security for Population ” the NSCDC Anambra Command reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening community security, disaster preparedness and national resilience.
