Traditional ruler of Awkuzu, Igwe Prof. Charles Anikweze, has called for increased support, education and protection for women while raising concern over the growing educational divide between boys and girls.

Speaking at a one day training program organized by the West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy (WABMA) in Awka, Anambra State, Igwe Anikweze stressed that women should be educated to enhance their status in society.

The monarch noted that while more girls are completing their education, many boys drop out by Junior Secondary School three (JSS3) in pursuit of money making ventures, creating an imbalance that must be addressed.

He stressed the importance of bridging the gap in education and ensuring that women are supported and cherished. Other traditional rulers present at the event agreed, emphasizing the need to protect and uplift women in society.

The training was aimed at equipping leaders of faith and culture in Southeast Nigeria with strategies to address Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and enhancing their skills in documenting cases for advocacy and justice.

A legal expert and facilitator, Barr. Nnenna Anozie while delivering a lecture on “Understanding Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Its Impact” revealed that between March and June 2020, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recorded over 232 cases of SGBV, with reports continuing to rise. She identified cultural, social, economic and institutional factors, including gender inequality, poverty and weak enforcement of laws, as key drivers of the problem.

Anozie called for stronger community engagement to challenge harmful cultural practices while celebrating traditions that promote gender equity. She also emphasized the need to involve men and boys as allies in the fight against SGBV.

On his part, the Coordinator of Civil Society Organization (CSO) Awka North, Mr. Albert Chinwuko, urged the government to establish shelters for survivors of SGBV, either through public funding or partnerships with private organizations.

The event drew participation from traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations and media professionals, including Secretary, Traditional Rulers Council of Anambra State Igwe Pius Omachonu of Olumbanasa, Business Manager WABMA Mrs. Chidiebere Njoku Chairman Guild of Public Affairs Analysts, Enugu State and Dr. Ambrose Igboke.
