Renowned philanthropist and NUJ patron, Iyom Ngozi Chinelo Obikwelu has hailed the re-election of Dr. Emeka Odogwu as Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Council on February 3, 2025 as dawn of new era for the union.
Obikwelu made the declaration when she hosted the newly elected NUJ Executives at Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
She lauded the performance of the union under Comrade Odogwu’s leadership and expressed her joy over his re-election.
She described the NUJ as her project, having been nominated as a patron, and emphasized that celebrating Odogwu was her way of recognizing his integrity, experience and dedication to journalism.
“He has been re-elected to complete the good work he started. Journalism is a profession that comes from the heart, yet journalists are often not given the recognition they deserve. They are the powerhouses on a mission and I believe that sooner or later, they will be fully appreciated for their invaluable contributions to society,” she stated.
Obikwelu urged journalists to remain steadfast in their duties, adding that without their efforts, the world would be unaware of crucial events and developments. She called for more support, recognition and appreciation for journalists, emphasizing their role in nation-building.
In his remarks, Comrade Emeka Odogwu expressed gratitude for the unprecedented celebration, noting that since joining the union in 1999, he had never witnessed such an honour for a chairman. He praised Iyom Obikwelu for her generosity and unwavering support for the media profession.
“This is a rare honour, and I am overwhelmed by her kindness. She is an extraordinary personality and I pray for God’s blessings and mercy upon her,” Odogwu said. The event brought together key stakeholders in the media industry, NUJ executives and well-wishers, reinforcing the importance of journalists contributions to society.
