Veterans in Anambra State have called on the government, philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to support the construction of a state Secretariat to enhance their welfare and activities.
Speaking during the final lap of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held on January 15, 2025 at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square Awka, Dr. Agbogu Benedict, State Executive Chairman of Nigerian Legion, Anambra State Council, expressed gratitude to Governor Charles Soludo for allocating six plots of land for the project.
Dr. Agbogu emphasized, however, that while the land allocation is appreciated, it was not enough. He appealed for resources to construct the Secretariat, noting that veterans in other states already have functional facilities. “We are asking the federal government, state government, philanthropists and government appointees to come to our aid and help us build our Secretariat. It is not enough to allocate land, we need the resources to put up the structure,” he stated.
The chairman also highlighted the sacrifices of veterans and urged the federal government to improve their welfare packages. “Veterans gave their youthful years in service to the nation. Their sacrifices should not be forgotten. We appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the welfare of veterans, as many are still clamoring for better support,” he added.
In a related development, the representative of the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association ( NAOWA), Mrs. Ezekiel Mary described the Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn moment to honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes. She recounted her personal losses during the war and urged families of fallen heroes to remain prayerful and resilient.
Mrs. Ezekiel commended the government ongoing efforts to support families of fallen heroes, including scholarships and initiatives benefiting widows. “The journey is never easy, but with faith and government support, we can overcome,” she said.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an annual event to honor Nigeria’s military heroes, past and present, while calling attention to the welfare and needs of veterans and their families.
