Thirty inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre Onitsha, Anambra State Command have achieved outstanding results in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Receiving the results from Ministry of Education, Deputy Controller incharge of MSCC Onitsha, Sunday Igwe on behalf of Controller of Corrections Anambra State Command Usifo Joseph appreciated the Controller General of Corrections Haliru Nababa for the opportunity given to the inmates to develop themselves while in custody.
He encouraged the inmates to aspire higher by enrolling for undergraduate programmes in the National Open University of Nigeria.
He said, “The Controller General’s commitment to inmates’ development has created a supportive environment, fostering academic excellence within the correctional facilities.
“This remarkable feat by inmates of the MSCC Onitsha , demonstrates the potential for rehabilitation and personal growth among inmates.
“This exceptional performance and success story showcases the transformative power of education and the importance of supporting individuals, regardless of their circumstances, in achieving their full potential.”
The visibly excited inmates promised to enroll into the NOUN undergraduate programmes.
Recall that the NCoS in partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria offers opportunity for inmates to pursue degree courses through the study centers across the Custodial Centres in the federation.
These inmates no doubt will leverage on this to pursue courses of their choice and thereafter become graduates.
