UNIZIK Students, other Tenants Fleeing 4-Storey Building over Developing Cracks

Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, UNIZIK and other tenants at a residential building popularly known as Diamond Hostel at Ifite- Awka area of Anambra State capital are reportedly fleeing the building over appearance of cracks on the structure, viewed by occupants as sign of imminent collapse.

The 113-room hostel, comprising two blocks, A & B, located off St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, UNIZIK Temp. Site, Awka, had for decades been comfortable abode for many students and hustlers in the area.

While some occupants had fled the building for fear of possible collapse, others who probably, had nowhere to run to, have raised the alarm for intervention by relevant authorities.

Most of the occupants however declined comments when approached, but our correspondent gathered that the landlord had already been alerted about the sorry state of the facility.

The landlord of the hostel, said to resident abroad, could not be reached for his official position as both tenants and the Caretaker of the facility were unwilling to provide his phone number.

On his own part, the Caretaker and Lawyer Managing the building also declined to grant interview on the situation, but however accused the tenants of exaggerating the situation.
