A member of an armed robbery gang was on Sunday gunned down by security operatives in Ifite Awka, Anambra State

The incident happened around 6am while residents of the area were going for Sunday Mass.

The deceased is said to specialize in robbing unsuspecting persons going to church early on Sundays.

One of the victims who preferred anonymity said she was robbed of her phone and other items.

She said: “I was coming back from work, and one other girl who was going to church just came out of their lodge gate, and the three men approached me and started asking what I had in my bag.

“The girl who was going to church saw them and flung her bag into the bush. They searched my bag and saw the phone and money and they took it. Then the other girl started running into her lodge, while me I ran towards the bush.”

She said while one of the robbers pursued her, the other two chased after the other girl, and while she ran into the bush and hid, one of the boys was coming towards her section, apparently trying to find her.

“Immediately, a local security man emerged and shot at the robber, killing him, while the other two fled,” she sobbed.

Our Correspondent gathered that the body of the deceased was still lying in the area as at the time of filing this report.
