The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has directed withdrawal of the Super Eagles from the proposed second leg tie against Libya in the ongoing 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The move to boycott the match follows harsh treatment meted out to the team and coaching crew on arrival in the north African country for the tie.
The Nigerian contingent were stuck at Al Abraq Airport in Libya for 12 hours after their flight was inexplicably diverted. The host also failed to provide transport or send officials to receive the Nigerian team as is customary, thereby, leaving the team stranded with no food for over 12 hours.
Following the harsh treatment, Super Eagles players have refused to play and the NFF is reportedly arranging for their safe return to Nigeria.
AnambraDaily gathered that reports in Libyan media claim that their players and officials were maltreated during their 0-1 loss in Nigeria last weekend.
Recall that players and officials of the Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL club, Enyimba FC of Aba also slept at an airport in Libya for 24 hours when their opponents changed match venue without communication in 2022.
