The federal government has stated that the country’s 115 Federal Unity Colleges will soon be split into basic and secondary schools.
Dr Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, said this during the Annual General Meeting of Unity College Principals in Abuja on Tuesday. The event was themed: “Entrepreneurship Education: A Panacea for Self-Reliance and National Development.”
Sununu remarked that the idea to unbundle the Unity Colleges aligns with the National Policy on Education.
The Minister indicated that unbundling Federal Unity Colleges would result in increased financing for infrastructural improvements, teacher welfare, and employment opportunities creation.
He added that the Ministry, with support from relevant government agencies, would ensure this is achieved in the shortest possible time.
Sununu said, “I want to emphasise the significance of fostering an entrepreneurial spirit in our youths, a spirit that will propel them toward self-reliance and contribute meaningfully to our nation’s development.
“Unemployment remains a pressing concern, and it is our collective responsibility to equip our students with the skills and mindset necessary to succeed.
“Entrepreneurship education offers a solution to this challenge as it prepares students to think creatively, innovatively, and develop the confidence to take calculated risks.”
Sununu urged principals to collaborate as essential stakeholders in improving the educational landscape of their schools.
He also asked them to curb social vices, instill a maintenance culture among students, and work with their host communities to ensure the Colleges’ overall security and growth.
Additionally, Dr. Idowu Akinbamijo, Chairperson of the Principals of Federal Unity Schools, stated that the meeting aimed to determine the agenda for the coming year and create capacity for the tasks ahead.
