Onitsha Gets First University, Matriculates 300 students

University on the Niger, Onitsha, Anambra State at the weekend matriculated a total of 300 students as pioneer members of the institution.

The faith based institution, owned and managed by the Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion is the first University to be cited in the commercial city of the State.

Speaking during the maiden matriculation ceremony held at the University Auditorium – Archbishop C.J Patterson International Complex, Vice Chancellor of University, Very Rev. Prof. Chinedu Nebo restated the institution’s commitment to sound moral, entrepreneurial and academic upbringing.

Nebo, former Minister of Power expressed gratitude to God for the university’s progress so far and prayed for God’s continual guidance and prosperity upon the school.

“The vision and commitment of the university as a unique multi-lingual institution to sound moral, entrepreneurial and academic upbringing,” Nebo said.

Chancellor of the University, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo said the institution was patterned to sustain impact of early missionaries under the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in education and morality.

He recounted tremendous impact of the missionaries, expressing confidence that the University would surpass the missionaries’ achievements.

While congratulating the matriculants, Nw Prelate challenged them to be ready for academic experience of life time which would prepare them for impactful and successful life.

Delivering an inspiring lecture on the topic “Tertiary Education in the 21st Century, Identifying the Missing Gaps and Harnessing the Opportunities”, Keynote speaker, Chief Osita Chidoka urged the students to embrace learning with dedication, passion, resilience.

He also challenged them to cherish the University as revered citadel of learning and intellectual development.

“A folklore axiom of Uche (Sense) and Uchu (Hardwork) complemented with Egwu Chukwu (the fear of God) make one excel in life while Uche and Uchu without Egwu Chukwu make one a terror to the society,” he posited.

Vice Chancellor of the institution, Very Rev. Prof. Chinedu Nebo expressed gratitude to God for the university’s progress so far and prayed for God’s continual guidance and prosperity upon the school.

He restated the vision and commitment of the university as a unique multi-lingual institution to sound moral, entrepreneurial and academic upbringing.

Royal Father of the day and Obi of Onitsha, HRM Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi) congratulated the newly matriculated students, just as he commended the Chancellor’s visionary leadership and commitment to academic excellence, with a focus on the upcoming generations.

Director Communications, Sir Oselloka Offoh disclosed that the institution is the first University in Nigeria to commence Artificial Intelligence (A.I) Education with Critical Thinking, French and Igbo languages as Compulsory backups.
