Suspected cultists on Tuesday evening killed a young man, popularly called Nwanayoeze around Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka temporary site junction in Awka, Anambra State.
Though details of the killing is still sketchy, but AnambraDaily gathered that the deceased, suspected to be a cultist was gunned down around tricycle park, Unizik Junction.
His death has been linked to the ongoing cult war in Awka, which has claimed many young people, as rival cult groups target members of opposing groups.
Tuesday evenings killing has also been linked to the ongoing war. According to Sources, the deceased assailants fled immediately he was gunned down, while his cult members quickly took away his corpse to avoid being confiscated by security agencies.
Those trading within the area confirmed that Nwanayoeze was a very prominent youth who is feared by many, with capacity of formenting trouble, but was never suspected to be a cultist.
Reacting, Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said: โThe command is aware of unconfirmed news of the cult-related killing of a man popularly known as Nwanayoeze today in Awka.
โOur Operatives were immediately drafted to the scene and there was no trace of such. Meanwhile, we are working with the residents of the area to ascertain what happened. Also, Police Patrol has been intensified in Awka.โ
