A police station at Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra state was on Thursday set ablaze by gunmen.

The hoodlums numbering about 30 who stormed the area between 3am and 4am also attacked the Local Government Headquarters.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspects were shouting: “DPO must go. He has overstayed. He has stayed in Anaocha for over 15 years,” during the attack.

“The hoodlums also whisked away some police operatives, including female police personnel at the police station.

“They described the Police Station as another SARS station,” a source said.

When contacted, Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, adding that the hoodlums did not whisk away any police personnel.

He said, “The hoodlums were successfully repelled by the superior fire-power of the police operatives who engaged them and forced them to flee.

“Although they attacked the police station with IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), they did not take away any arms, and did not whisk away any police personnel.

Ikenga noted that Police operations were still ongoing in the area while he was reacting to the incident, promising to communicate further development on the incident later.
