Member representing Awka South 1 constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Henry Mbachu has appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to construct mini-markets in the Awka metropolis.
He said the move would provide relief for street traders facing challenges of lack of space, harassment, and insecurity.
He made the appeal through a motion he sponsored titled “Urging Mr. Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, to direct the Special Adviser on Trade and Markets to commence the construction of affordable mini markets within Awka Metropolis to control the menace of street trading and associated effects on the state capital.”
The motion, which was adopted by the House, expressed empathy for majority of the street traders trying to escape poverty and cannot afford to rent lock shops.
According to the motion, street traders are exposed to various hazards, such as accidents, environmental pollution, and criminal activities.
“Street trading has negative impacts on the aesthetics, traffic, and security of the state capital.
“The increasing population within the state has led to the emergence of various quarters within the Awka metropolis.
“The inhabitants of these quarters prefer to patronise the shanties that have proliferated within the capital territory to save on living and transportation costs.
“The shanties are unsanitary, unsafe, and unregulated and pose a threat to public health and order,” the motion partly reads.
Mbachu and his colleagues were optimistic that the creation of the mini-markets would effectively address the problem of shanties and street trading, as well as promote growth of micro and small businesses in the state.
They said that the mini-markets would provide adequate and affordable spaces for the traders, and also improve the hygiene, security, and convenience of the customers.
The lawmakers further argued that the mini-markets would enhance revenue generation and economic development of the state.
The house further resolved to urge Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to direct Special Adviser on Trade and Markets to commence the construction of mini-markets within Awka Metropolis.
They however commended the Governor for his visionary and transformative leadership and pledged their support for his administration.
