Factional executive of Nawfia Progressive Union (NPU) in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State have been arrested following alleged unauthorised meeting on the instance of President-General, Sir Nathan Enemuo.
The meeting presided over by Enemuo was suddenly disrupted when police officers from the state command stormed the area.
The factional executive claimed that the meeting was to brief the community of the judgment of a Neni High Court sitting in Ogidi presided over by Justice E.I. Ndigwe, which nullified the activities of the chief Chike Nwegbe led caretaker committee of Nawfia progressive union.
The Enemuo led group also claimed the High Court gave his faction the power to conduct an election for Nawfia community within 47days.
Anambra Daily gathered that apart from the poor attendance to the meeting, soldiers detailed to protect participants during the meeting were helpless, when police men invaded the venue and disrupted the apparently illegal meeting.
“One of the claimants to the Igweship position of Nawfia, Dr Shedrack Moguluwa narrowly escaped from the scene.
“The police prevented total breakdown of law and order because the majority of the people of Nawfia are with the sitting PG, Chief Daniel Okoye Okongwu and the Traditional Ruler Igwe Dr Daniel Obelle.
“The factional group was accused of destroying the keys of the Town Hall at the same time turned down the invitation from the commissioner of police, requesting for the presentation of certified true copy (CTC) of the judgment delivered on the 30th of January 2024 to prevent breakdown of law and order in Nawfia,” the source said.
Speaking at the Town Hall before arrival of the police, a senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mr B I. Nwofor, leading the factional group, said he is a law abiding citizen and expects everybody to respect the judgment of the court.
Nwofor who was holding brief for the Nathan Enemuo added that all the lawyers representing the parties in the case were in court when the judgment was delivered.
“It is only a stay of execution order by a court will prevent the execution of the order.
“The Nawfia progressive union led by chief Daniel Okoye Okongwu is not a party in the suit therefore cannot appeal against the judgment,” he said.
Meanwhile the NPU- PG, Chief Okoye said he has instructed Lawyer to the Town Union, Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) to file an appeal immediately the CTC of the judgment is provided.
Reacting in his palace, Traditional Ruler of Nawfia, Igwe Dr Daniel obelle reiterated his determination to protect lives and property of his people by not allowing trouble makers to create problems in the community.
He assured that Traditional Rulers are working closely with the government and security operatives to ensure peace reigned in the state.
He appealed to the people to avoid any act capable of creating disaffection in the community as he was favourably disposed to follow due process in obtaining justice.
