A 70 year old woman identified as Mrs Ojuza Osoko, has escaped death when a band of irate bees descended on her in front of a shrine at Umueje community in Ayamelum LGA, Anambra State.
The incident which took place on Friday 11th January, 2024.
A family source, Mr. Igwebuike Osoko (Wazaga), told Anambradaily that the septugenarian was passing by the shrine when the bees descended on her, attacking her till she fell unconscious.
He shared the story of the dramatic efforts that saved the woman’s life: “They (bees) were stinging her everywhere until she fell down and became unconscious. I carried a napsack sprayer with insecticide to the scene and began to spray them on the bees before they left her.
Another eye witness Mr. Udemezue Udonwu explained that the woman was a victim of circumstances beyond her control. According to her, she was passing through one ogilisi tree where the bees had their honeycomb, without knowing that children had been throwing sticks at the tree moments earlier. “She did not know that children were throwing sticks on the tree flowers which provoked the bees to start fighting everyone around the area including the old woman who could not run fast until she was beaten to a stupor”, she said.
She further disclosed that some persons had been attacked by the bees prior to the incident, a development, Anambradaily learned, forced residents of the village to cut the tree that housed the bees.
However, a traditionist who spoke to our reporter on the incident, claimed that the victim might have offended the gods.
“Believe me, no attack of bees goes for nothing. I strongly believe that the woman in question may have done some abominable thing,” he said.
Assistant Resident p Pastor of The Assembly of God Church at Umueje, Pastor Christopher OBI, however disputed the claim. He also told Anambradaily that during a prayer session to the victim, there was no evil signals from any angles of the spiritual realm. According to him, there was nothing like abomination committed by the woman prior to the incident. The cleric condemned the idea of treating such incident as punishment from gods by Idol worshippers, urging them to repent and save their soul.
Pastor Obi also advised people, especially the youths to fear and keep God’s commandments, desist from all manner of unrighteousness, repent and take the salvation of God Almighty.
“The way some people especially youths are bringing new and reviving shrine in communities, especially Umueje is alarming. If they don’t change fast, the future would be horrible”, he adds.
