A mother of three, Mrs Rashidat Bashir, on Tuesday, asked an Area Court, Centre-Igboro in Ilorin to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Ashomu Bashir, over accusation of infidelity.

The petitioner told the court that she was fed up with the marriage, saying the respondent had stopped performing his parental responsibility, both as a father and husband, long ago.

“I want this divorce because I’m tired of the stress and the psychological trauma.

“I’m the only person responsible for the house feeding, upkeep and even the three children’s school fees because my husband refused to provide for them.

“I hawk drugs from place to place and use the money to buy food and other things at home; but my husband always accuses me of adultery.

“He always fights me over accusations of sleeping with other men each time I go out to sell my goods; yet, he refuses to provide for our daily needs,” she told the court.

The respondent, however, pleaded with the court not to grant his wife’s request, saying he still loves his wife.

He requested to be given time to amicably resolve their disagreement.

The respondent told the court that things started to go wrong in the marriage when he lost his job and had to eke out a living by riding a commercial motorcycle.

“I know that she is trying her best for the family but I don’t like the way she is going about it,” he said.

The Judge, Hammad Ajumobi, advised the respondent to be mindful of his speech and the way he had been accusing his wife.

Ajumobi also cautioned the petitioner to be mindful of her movements and the company she was keeping to be avoid being misunderstood by her husband.

He, however, said that Shari’a law permits amicable settlement, especially when the parties involved were ready to explore the option.

He adjourned the case till Dec. 14, for either a report of settlement or continuation of hearing. (NAN)
