The lawmaker representing the Ayamelum State Constituency at the Anambra state House of Assembly, Hon. Benard Udemezue has pledged to do his best to promote quality education and agriculture in the constituency.
Udemezue made the pledge after offering scholarships to five students that scored highest marks in the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Ayamelum. The lawmaker who described education as key to unlocking the future, also announced that the number of beneficiaries in the N200,000 Scholarship Scheme will be increased to ten as from 2024.
He charged the beneficiaries of this year’s award to make good use of the facility in their academic pursuit.
The lawmaker adds that his education empowerment was in line with his vision for turning the area into agriculture hub and food basket of the nation.
“Agriculture is a thing of great interest in Ayamelum. It is our hobby and the jawbone with which Ayamelum indegenes can achieve their plans, in terms of training their children in the school, sending them abroad, building houses etc. In fact, if we fail to empower our people for Improved agriculture, we are not doing Ayamelum people any good. “Therefore, I am calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo led administration to help Ayamelum people by making available good road network, electricity and other social amenities in the area.
Udemezue who won the legislative seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also harped on the need to restore peace in Ayamelum.
“Peace brings about progress. Sustainable peace is also our prayer in the constituency. I must align myself with the Soludo administration’s efforts to promote peace and security in Anambra State. We need them mostly in this constituency so that our people can go about their normal business and social life without fear.
“We have already called Omor and Anaku for a peace talk as a clan. We all know that Ayamelum communities do share single motherhood. We are one inseparable entity. And God will help and answer our prayers for sustainable peace.
Udemezue whose electoral victory was recently affirmed by a tribunal sitting at Awka, attributed his triumph against the former Speaker of the 7th Anambra Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uchenna Okafor of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the will of God and people.
He said: “It’s not easy to beat an incumbent speaker at the poll and the electoral Tribunal.
“In the beginning, I felt both elected and threatened because some people would say, ‘you are dealing with a person of incumbent power, the Speaker of the house, you are going to lose the case.
“But when I realized that upon the heavyweight of my opponent, many people were still supporting me and God was solidly behind my mandate, I kept pushing.
“I am happy with the outcome of the tribunal because the result INEC announced in the State Assembly Election in Ayamelum was authenticated by the Tribunal Court of Awka.
The lawmaker seized the opportunity to thank his constituents for giving him the mandate, assuring that he won’t disappoint them.
“The people of Ayamelum have carried me shoulder high in giving me a total support to represent them in Anambra State 8th Assembly Awka. May God bless them, “he said.
