Anambra’s Lucy, Chigozie Nwankwo Win Gold, Silver Medals in 100M Race

Lucy Nwankwo and Chigozie Nwankwo of Anambra on Saturday won the gold and silver medals in 100 meters race at the 7th National Youth Games in Asaba, the Delta.

Lucy Nwankwo finished the race in 12.28 seconds to win the coveted gold medal as the fastest at the games.

She was discovered at the 2022 edition of the All Aniocha Local Government Area Secondary School Athletics Championship organised by Patrick-Estate Onyedum who was then the chairman of the LGA and also chairman of Anambra Athletics Association.

The 13-year-old girl had won the best athlete award at the First Solution School Sports Festival held between May and June.

Chigozie Nwankwo, another product of the school sports festival, finished second to win the silver medal for Anambra in the much anticipated final sprint for girls at the festival.

Both Nwankwos, who are not related biologically, were part of the gold winning 4×100 meters relay quartet, which stunned the enthusiastic crowd at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Friday.

Other members of the quartet were Oluebube Ezechukwu and Adaeze Eze.

The final day medal haul increased Anambra’s tally at the 2023 NYG, which was concluded on Saturday, to 16, comprising seven gold, six silver and three bronze medals.

This is against the state’s record of two gold, nine silver and three bronze medals at the 6th edition of the games in Ilorin, Kwara. (NAN)
