Five women on Friday lost their lives while four others sustained varying degrees of injury in a fatal motor accident at Odumodu junction by Nteje, along Awka-Onitsha expressway, Anambra State.
The crash which occurred around 7.30am, involved two vehicles, a Mistibushi L300 bus with registration number: XE245AWK and a commercial Daf/Leyland truck with registration number: T-19094LA.
An eyewitness said both vehicles were heading to Awka and Onitsha respectively when they suddenly collided at the junction.
“The two vehicles got to the spot at same time. Due to the weight of the container being conveyed by the truck, it fell on the bus and crashed, killing five passengers on board, while others were seriously injured,” he said.
Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Adeoye Irelewuyi, Confirmed the crash, attributing the cause to failed portion of the road.
While sympathizing with the deceased family and praying for quick recovery of the victims, Irelewuyi urged motorist to drive with caution, and be observant of their environment while driving.
He said, Ten people comprising 3 male adults and 7 female adults were involved in the crash. 5 female adults were killed, 2 male adults and 2 female adults sustained varying degrees of injury while 1 male adult was rescued unhurt.
“FRSC rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje took the injured victims to Divine Care Hospital, Umunya for medical attention, while the dead victims were taken to Chira Hospital for doctors confirmation before deposition at New Jerusalem Mortuary, Nteje.
“As at the time of this report, the Sector Commander in collaboration with the Unit Commander Nteje are making efforts to remove the obstruction caused by the crash.”
