The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) says that survivors of domestic and sexual violence were more at risk of having suicidal thoughts.
DSVA said this in a tweet posted on Sunday on its official Twitter handle @LSdvsa, which was monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
It stated that domestic and sexual violence could contribute to feeling of hopelessness and despair.
Mrs Titilayo Vivour-Adeniyi, told NAN on Monday in Lagos that the agency was also helping survivors cope with mental stress, which could lead to suicidal thoughts or even suicide.
She said that the DSVA also focused on the state of mind and continuous wellbeing of survivors and victims. โWe stand hand in hand with individuals fighting silent battles everyday.โ
NAN reports that Sept. 10 every year is celebrated globally as World Suicide Prevention Day. The 2023 Theme is the triennial theme from 2021 to 2023, โCreating Hope Through Actionโ.
โWe recognise that lifeโs challenges can weigh heavily on your spirit and we want you to know that you are not alone. Your resilience is inspiring and there is hope even in the darkest moment,โ the tweet stated.
According to the agency, stigma, shame and fear often silences survivors.
It urged the public to save lives by providing support and resources for survivors, asking them to make a difference by speaking out.
