Mr Wasiu Adesina , Chairman of Ikorodu Local council has called on the youth not to be idle , but engage themselves in productive activities in order to secure their future. The chairman made the call on Saturday, during the graduation ceremony of 100 students trained in various digital skills in Ikorodu.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the two -week training was organised by the council in conjunction with Speed up Lagos ,an organisation. The beneficiaries , all residents ,were trained in graphic design, social media advertisement /trade promotion,animation ,sound and beat production ,picture editing and coding .
Adesina noted that skills acquisition was one sure way to be self-reliant ,saying he was excited that the beneficiaries had been successfully trained in digital skills.
“We are extremely happy that we are playing our part to meet the needs of the youths of our community. With the graduation of 100 students trained in different IT skills today , we have promoted knowledge and skills acquisition .
“And with skills acquired ,the beneficiaries have been equipped to be self-reliant ” he said.
The council chairman said the training was part of efforts to develop young people in the community and provide opportunities for them in science and technology. While saying the programme would be sustained ,he urged the beneficiaries to make the best use of the opportunity and take their education seriously .
“I urge you to take your education very seriously and make the best use of it. During our time, we lacked basic learning facilities like internet that we have it today.
“Please ,make the best use of the skills you have acquired today,you are better with them”,he said.
He said the council would distribute no fewer than 200 General Certificate of Examination(GCE) forms to students and inaugurate completed five blocks of classrooms in the community “in a couple of weeks”,
He said the interventions and several others, were part of efforts to promote education in the community.
“In a couple of weeks, the council will inaugurate five blocks of classrooms at Salvation Army Primary School with furniture to enable students learn in a conducive environment ” said Adesina.
speaking, Mrs Gbemisola Ajetunmobi, Director Speed up Lagos, said the training would have positive impact beneficiaries and urged them to put the skills acquired to best use.
Ajetunmobi, represented by Mrs Kemisola Sanni, commended the council chairman for his contributions to education ,and the success of the programme.
A beneficiary, Miss Faithia Ayomiku said the training had equipped ber with skills to do certain things on her phone and make money for herself.
Another beneficiary ,Miss Olayinka Ahmed, who commended the chairman for the programme , advised all other beneficiaries to use the skills to empower themselves.(NAN)
