Anam youths set Flood Management Committee, demand improved care for victims

Youths drawn from the riverrine communities in Anam, Anambra West Local government area of Anambra state have called for holistic effort towards better management of the impending flooding crisis in the state and the country.

Anam youths under the aegis of the Elite Youth of Anam Foundation (EYAF) made the call, shortly after setting up flood management advocacy committee to help rally efforts towards evacuation and support of flood displaced persons in the area.

According to a statement released by the group, the decision to set up a committee to assist government and non-governmental organizations in better mitigation of the crisis.
If stressed that there was a deep concern about the untold suffering that Anambra West residnets usually pass through during this flooding season and the social, economic, health, security and other challenges that they usually face afterwards due to their heavy losses.

EYAF noted that it would no longer treat the flooding crisis as a government matter, and therefore called on well-mensing sons and daughters of Anam and Anambra West to support the ongoing efforts to mobilize human and material resources to ensure early evacuation of displaced persons to the various Internally Displaced Persons, IDP camps set up by government as well as ensure that the inmates were taken care of.

“The Executive decided to set up 2023 Flood Management Advocacy Committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of execution of our plans on sensitization on the flood to reduce the impact on our people”, the statement read in parts.

The committee which has Pastor Frank Agulu as chairman and Chuks Nnachor as secretary; was tasked with raising funds as well as awareness on the best ways to mitigate the crisis, among others.

Other members of the committee include, Mrs. Asikaralu Okafor, Technical Adviser, Mr. Romanus Okoye, Media Coordinator while Dr. Obiora Emeka Peter, Mr. Emma Okeke, Mrs. Rose Onyeka, Mr. Nonso Edoziuno, Mr. Ejike Anekwe aremembers.

The committee is expected to meet the Transition Committee (TC) Chairman, Anambra West LGA, Hon. Felix Ikechi to get specific details about what the government was doing; engage with the Presidents General of various communities in the affected areas as well as the federal and state’s emergency management agencies (NEMA and SEMA).
