Ex-Power Minister heads Anglican University on the Niger

Former Minister of Power under former President Goodluck Jonathan administration and one time Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Chinedu Nebo has been appointed pioneer Vice Chancellor, University on the Niger, Anambra State.

The University, owned by Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion and recently granted take-off license by Federal Government is reportedly the only tertiary institution singlehandedly built by one Diocese in the country.

Nebo’s appointment, together with that of the Registrar, Dr Mrs Odisa Okeke, were made public by Bishop on the Niger, Rt Rev Dr Owen Nwokolo, during the Trinity Ordination of the Diocese on the Niger, held at All Saints’ Cathedral, Onitsha.

Nebo, a Professor of Engineering, is an Archdeacon and Provost emeritus in the Anglican Church, while Dr Mrs Okeke, was former Registrar of Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, FUNAI, Ebonyi State as well as former Deputy Registrar in-charge of Records and Statistics Unit, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, Imo state.

The University on the Niger is expected to take off during next academic session with four Faculties namely, Medicine and Dentistry, Allied Health Sciences, Science and Computing and Management and Social Sciences.

The seventeen Departments and Degree programmes to be offered by the University are Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Radiation Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Dental Therapy and Health.

Others are Information Management, Microbiology, Forensic Science, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Economic and Development Studies, Accountancy and Human Psychology.

Wife of the Bishop on the Niger, Dr Nonyelum Elsie Nwokolo, had few weeks ago, led a delegation to Abuja for collection of Certificate of Licence for the University.

Another success story of the institution is the recent upgrade and approval of the Iyienu Mission Hospital Ogidi as the University on the Niger Teaching Hospital, Iyienu, Ogidi, Idemili North, Local Government Area of the State.
