Women group deploys 30 electoral observers ahead February poll

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Nigeria (WSRN) said it would deploy thirty women to observe forthcoming general elections across the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Anambra State.

Executive Director, Hope Okoye who disclosed this at a capacity training for media practitioners on gender based reporting and Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, said the group would also open Situation Room ahead of the exercise.

She several observers had been trained by the body to assist in feeding in the situation room with electoral contents especially as it concerns women.

She said, “We will open a Situation Room where election contents will come in. 30 election observers will be sent to 21LGAs to monitor the situation and report back through our toll lines. 

“Anambra State is among ten States and FCT where WSRN is monitoring election in the country. We will look at it in gender perspective to see how it affects the genders.”

Delivering a paper on “Understanding Gender Based Violence, Strategies for Combating it and issues for Advocacy”, a media expert, Mrs Ify Unachukwu charged media practitioners to partner with Civil Society organizations to enhance the fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV).

She also noted that the media could highten the fight against gender based violence through agenda setting, accurate and clear communication on GBV.

The veteran journalist explained that reproductive rights are legal rights and freedoms relating to reproduction and reproductive health.

She also argued that gender based violence is against the law and everybody has right to adequate living standards.

“The media can highten the fight against gender based violence through agenda setting, accurate, honest and clear communication on gender based violence,” she said.
