No fewer than 20 houses and residents of Abor village, Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, have been submerged by flood caused by heavy down pour that started Sunday night.

Consequently, road users traveling along the ever-busy Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Old expressway, especially drivers, had their vehicles stuck in the pool of water which flowed from neighbouring communities of Umudioka and Umunachi.

Reacting to the ugly incident, a resident whose house was among those that were submerged by the flood, and who simply identified himself as Innocent Okwu, said that, “My brother, we are in trouble for years now, as nothing is serious in fighting the flood menace has been done, The State Government is currently working on how to stop the flooding here but the thing continues unabated.

“Over 20 houses and this road have been submerged by the flood and currently the State Government is working on it but the situation has become worse. Properties worth millions of naira have been damaged and we kept vigil from Sunday to Monday as the flood entered our houses” he revealed.

In his own reaction, a driver, Mr. Peter Omeha, said, “I ply this road on daily basis but whenever it rains I stop to avoid my passengers being stocked in the flood or drowned. Government should come to the rescue of the residents and road users before one dies here”

Meanwhile, drivers and other road users have resorted to use of alternative routes that include, Abatete-Ogidi road and Ogidi-Umudioka road, since Sunday till Monday, as the flood increases in size.

As at the time of filing this report pedestrians have abandoned the road to avoid being drowned even as a boat brought by the State Government is installed there for the evacuation of the flood.
