Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District at the National Assembly on Sunday night escaped gruesome murder, thanks to his bullet proof vehicle. His personal and security aides were not that lucky as about seven reportedly lost their lives following an ambush attack by suspected assassins at Enugu Ukwu in Njikoka local government area of Anambra State.
An eye witness said the senator was reportedly injured in the attack in which some people described as an assassination attempt on the Young Peoples Party, YPP, senator.
An eyewitness disclosed that Ubahโs convoy came under attack at Enugwu Ukwu as it was ambushed by heavily armed men who opened fire on them.
โThe senator managed to escape as his car was riddled with bullets. I was driving up to that spot from the link road to the express when some people in a shop shouted at me and asked me to turn back and take another road, which I didโ, the source claimed.
AnambraDaily gathered that no fewer than seven person, including police operatives were killed during the bloody attack.
Informed source further disclosed that shortly after the gunmen opened fire on the convoy, police operatives in the convoyed responded, but about threw of them were gunned down by the attackers who fled the scene afterwards.
Iyke Orji, a social media user claimed the attack on Senator Ubah, was carried out by ‘Hired killers’.
He wrote: “It was a calculated attempt. It wasnโt an impromptu stuff. Information was gathered about the time of movement and takeoff. The policemen were about four in numbers and they were attacked.
โAll their arms were collected. The boys that spearheaded that attack were about nine in numbers.โ
However, another source who begged not to be named said six policemen were killed in the attack.
Our reporter could not reach Senator Ubah for confirmation as his line remained busy all through.
The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that there was an attack on men of the command at Enugwu-Ukwu, but insisted that the casualty figure remained unknown.
He said: โYes, there was an attack at Enugwu-Ukwu, but the casualty figure is not clear. As I speak to you, the CP has personally led a team of men to the scene, and normalcy has been restored”.
He promised to brief journalists on the findings of the command.
