A 29-year old woman, Chinwendu Umegbaka has been arrested for allegedly stealing her neighbour’s child in Okpoko, Onitsha, Anambra State.
The suspect was said to have stolen the 3-year old girl on Saturday, July 2, 2022 with the intention to selling her off to willing buyers.
AnambraDaily further learnt the suspect had initially denied knowledge of the victim’s whereabout, but later confessed to plans to sell her during police interrogation.
The Anambra State Police Command in a statement through its Public Relations Officer, DSP, Tochukwu Ikenga said the baby has been rescued and returned to her parents while investigations continues.
He said : “The Anambra State Command Operatives on July 2, 2022 at 4:30pm arrested one Miss Chinwendu Umegbaka, 29-years-old, native Isinkwo Abaomege in Onicha LGA of Ebonyi State.
“She was arrested on alleged case of child stealing at Nwawulu street, Okpoko, Onitsha, Anambra State.
“Preliminary information reveals that the suspect is a neighbor to the parent of the child.
“Chinwendu when arrested initially denied to know the whereabout of the 3-year-old girl. Further interrogation by the police made her to confess to stealing the child with the intention of selling her.
“Meanwhile, the child has been recovered and handed over to the parent.”
