Opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has denied social media reports, earlier today (not in Anambra daily) to the effect that the PDP national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, had been “suspended over allegations of misappropriation.”
The reports had claimed that the party’s deputy national chairman (North), Amb. Umar Damagun, had taken over the chairmanship of the party in acting capacity at the behest of its national working committee (NWC).
In a press release issued late this evening (Wednesday), by Simon Imobo-Tswam, a special assistant
(SA) to Dr Ayu on communication and strategy, the party said that Dr. Iyorchia Ayu remained the PDP national chairman, adding that he only took a 2-week leave from June 21, 2022 and would be back on his desk next week, July 6, 2022.
The release added that Ayu, in line with due process, “formally handed over to the deputy national chairman (North), Amb. Umar Damagun, in which capacity Damagun even “today, presided over the inauguration of the Osun state Gubernatorial Campaign Council, headed by the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, H.E. Douye Diri.”
Imobo-Tswam pointed out that, even in the course of the inauguration of that Osun election council today, the acting chairman expressly stated that he was doing so “on behalf of my able national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu,” adding “I hereby inaugurate you.”
The statement ascribed the said report to those it described as “mischief makers and idle minds,” advising the public to ignore them.
