Travelers across Anambra State may heave a sigh of relief as the state government declares a state of emergency on traffic congestion across the State. The government approved the introduction of new traffic management measures, train ATMA staff and reactivate traffic lights among others.
The Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu disclosed this after the State Executive Council briefing held at the Government House, Awka.
According to Sir Nwosu, a new road traffic management measure would be introduced to ensure that Anambra residents do not spend more than twenty minutes in traffic.
He further disclosed that the Anambra Traffic Management Agency was directed to deploy its officers in the 20 most difficult areas in the state.
The commissioner further disclosed that Governor Soludo has directed that men and officers of the state traffic management agency be trained by the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Army, as well as recruit more people into the Agency, for increased capacity and operational efficiency.
Nwosu stated that the Anambra government also approved servicing and reactivation of all traffic lights across the state and that the Commissioner for Local government was directed to identify areas in the communities that can be used as official bus stops.
According to the Commissioner, among other issues discussed at the meeting were the adoption of the name; Anambra State Executive Council as against Executive Council, the adoption of a policy to introduce urban agriculture to increase food production in Anambra State where every household deploy spaces in their domain to plant agricultural produce, the transition from inorganic farming to regenerative agriculture to improve quality of agricultural products.
Nwosu further disclosed that the State Fire Service will be restructured to become more responsive and effective, emphasizing that it will be decentralized and brought closer to the people, revealing that the era of using phone calls has been phased out, while the Anambra State emergency fire response application has been activated.
Recall that governor Chukwuma Soludo, last month ordered the massive repair of various critical roads in Anambra, as part of the move to reduce traffic congestion in the state.
